April 3, 2012 (Tuesday)
Each blog this week will have two parts: 1. What happened? 2. What does it mean to us?
1. What happened?
Jesus and the religious leaders had a confrontation in the Temple. The officials questioned Jesus’ authority. They then tried to entrap him with trick questions, but his answers confounded them. Then Jesus answered their accusations with some of his own, pointing out in detail how hypocritical they were. The leaders were embarrassed by Jesus questions and incensed at his accusations. They made up their minds to put him to death.
2. What does it mean to us?
Are we willing to take our stand with Jesus no matter what the cost may be? The religious leaders launched a full assault against Jesus in a vain attempt to discredit him in the eyes of the people. Jesus stood his ground, exposing them as hypocrites and unveiling their sin. Are we living straightforward, honest lives of devotion to God? Do we realize that devotion to Christ can be costly, causing us to lose friends, and perhaps more. Are we willing to say with the Apostle Paul, “I am crucified with Christ?” If so, then we can also say with him, “I live, yet not I, but Christ lives in me!”
