What are you? What am I?
March 28, 2012 (Wednesday)
This evening at Bible Study and Prayer Meeting I will present a few thoughts based on Mark 9:30-37. This passage of Scripture contrasts the supreme commitment of Christ, who was committed to giving his life for others, with the self-centeredness of some of his disciples, who seemed to be concerned only about themselves.
This scene is almost surreal, because it shows us that Jesus was attempting to explain to his disciples that he would be arrested, tried and crucified, as they were engaging in conversation of their own about which of them was greatest. When they arrived in Capernaum, they went into a house where Jesus called all twelve of them to himself and asked them, “What were you talking about back there on the road?” They knew the answer, but were embarrassed and gave no answer. Jesus, also knowing the answer, then said to them, “If anyone wants to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all.” Then he took a child in His arms, saying to them, “Whoever receives one child like this in My name receives Me; and whoever receives Me does not receive Me, but Him who sent Me.”
With respect to the disciples, on the road they were being “childish.” Each wanted to be “king of the mountain.” Jesus, however, wanted them to be “childlike.”
The childish person is self-centered; the childlike person wants to be a helper.
The childish person wants to be the greatest; the childlike person wants someone to respect.
The childish person just wants to have his way; the childlike person wants to please those he loves.
Think of other contrasts you have observed between childish people and childlike people.
Are you childish or childlike? Am I childish or childlike?
