I want to believe
March 21, 2012 (Wednesday)
Tonight at prayer meeting I will present some thoughts on Mark 9:14-29, which tells about an experience Jesus had when he, James, Peter and John came down from the Mount of Transfiguration. Immediately they were met with cries for help. A man was there with his son, begging Jesus to help him.
The man reported to Jesus the condition of his son, possessed by a demon which made him deaf and mute, and threw him into a seizure. The other disciples could do nothing to help, and Jesus chided them for their lack of faith. He said to the father of the boy, “If you believe, all things are possible.” The man’s reply has become classic: “I believe. Help my unbelief,” whereupon Jesus commanded the unclean spirit to leave the boy. The spirit left, and the boy appeared to be dead. But Jesus took him by the hand and he stood up straight and strong.
The disciples asked Jesus, “Why could we not cast him out?” Jesus replied, “This kind can come forth by nothing but by prayer and fasting,” indicating that great and difficult duties require special preparation and self-denial. Matthew reports that Jesus told them that their lack of faith was the problem.
This brings us back to the grieving father’s cry, “I believe! Help my unbelief!” Both he and the disciples found it difficult to have faith. So the man set the pace for the disciples by asking for divine help in believing.
Have you ever felt like this? Have you asked the Lord to help you have faith?
