..or not?..

Walter Mitty was a fictional character created in a short story by James Thurber. Mitty spent a lot of time daydreaming of heroic exploits but in his real life he was a quiet, meek and mild-mannered man. The character has taken on a life of its own and its name is recognized as just another way of saying that a person can have an active fantasy life but an empty and sad real life.
An article in Sunday’s Star Telegram tells about a man whose fantasy came true as he lived a secret life of which not even his own family was aware. His daughter has been surprised to discover that her father was a G-man during World War 2. Harold “Hal” Sundvahl was an insurance agent living in Tulsa with his family, but during the war years was an F.B.I. agent. As his daughter went through his belongings, years after his death, she discovered many items, including personal correspondence with J. Edgar Hoover, that revealed his exciting life as an F.B.I. agent.
While many Walter Mittys dreamed about becoming heroes, this man actually did it.
I think the pews of our churches are occupied by many people who have dreams of being great servants of the Lord, but who never act upon those dreams. They know their God is real, but they need to know they can be real also. There are so many ways to serve the Lord today that we cannot count them. We need to quit daydreaming about being God’s servants and start serving him. In the real world. Real service. For our real God.
Let none hear you idly saying,
“There is nothing I can do.”
While the lost of earth are dying,
And the Master calls for you;
Take the task He gives you gladly;
Let His work your pleasure be;
Answer quickly when He calls you,
“Here am I, send me, send me.”
