Divine Sacrifice

“My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46)

He Gave Himself for You

”picJesus made seven statements while on the Cross. Today’s blog is devoted to the fourth of these statements, “My God, My God, why have you forsaken me? (Matt 27:46;Mark 15:34). The Father gave his one and only son so that we might be saved. This cry from Jesus on the cross shows us something of what Jesus and the Father felt as that sacrifice was made. Jesus is quoting Psalm 22, which begins with a cry of agony but turns toward praise of God’s righteousness. Clearly there is more here at the cross than the suffering of a man. This is the act of God. He required the sacrifice; he gave the sacrifice. Only one person in the entire universe was qualified to be the divine sacrifice, enabling the forgiveness of our sins. Jesus willingly gave himself for us.
On the cross, Jesus bore your guilt. “We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all” (Isaiah 53:6 NIV).
On the cross, Jesus bore your grief. “Surely our griefs He Himself bore, and our sorrows He carried; yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted” (Isaiah 53:4 NASB). Jesus can wipe away the tears caused by our sins.

On the cross, Jesus bore your punishment. The earth was plunged into darkness, from noon until 3:00 p.m., as Jesus took the penalty for all our sins upon himself. Here’s the explanation, from the Apostle Paul: “..[God] made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him” (2 Corinthinas 5:21 NASB).
Jesus Christ, God’s one and only son, became our divine sacrifice.

Bearing shame and scoffing rude,
In my place condemned He stood;
Sealed my pardon with His blood.
Hallelujah! What a Savior! *
