The votes have been counted in the Iowa Caucus, and the two top vote-getters got almost the same number of votes. Only 8 votes separated them: 30,015 to 30,007. A reminder once again of how important one vote can be. If 5 of those 8 had voted the other way, the results would have been reversed.
There once was a very strong mandate given to the people of America, one that you could hear on every corner and read in every newspaper: “Vote for the candidate of your choice, but vote!” The message of such an appeal is, “Democracy depends upon citizens’ involvement.” You and your vote are important.
From the early days of our nation’s life, one vote has been vitally important. In 1800 Thomas Jefferson was elected President by one vote in the House of Representatives after a tie in the electoral college. A similar situation won the election for John Quincy Adams. The 2000 presidential election had to go to the Supreme Court for a decision on a very close election.
