Wealth in Abundance
January 4, 2012 (Wednesday)
I remember a movie that was popular during my youth: “Boom Town,” starring Spencer Tracy, Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert (1940). Overnight, during an oil boom many years ago, small towns became growing cities.
Today, in South Texas, it’s happening again. The Eagle Ford Shale is a 400-mile strip from the border to East Texas, about 40 miles wide. Towns familiar to us that are now booming again are Three Rivers, Beeville, Karnes City, Kennedy, and many others.
These new oil and gas wells are being developed in areas where exploration and production of oil and gas was unfeasible until development of new methods. Now it can be done; people are becoming wealthy overnight, and small towns are booming.
What if you become wealthy, either through hard work, inheritance, new oil and gas discoveries, unexpected windfalls or by some other means. How would you handle your new situation, with plenty of money at your disposal?
No doubt, new wealth will be detrimental to some people, as they spend money wastefully and their ethics as well as good behavior suffer the consequences of irresponsibility. Others might hang onto every penny and never share any of it with less fortunate people. We could probably write several articles on ideas about this.
I hope it is your good fortune to have new wealth, and I pray if that happens you will hold on to your values and continue to be the same person. I trust you will be generous in helping others and thankful to the Lord for the privilege of having a significant part in His work on earth. The Scriptures urge us to be good stewards of whatever we may have, much or little.
