And thankful for it
June 20, 2011 (Monday)
Sunday was a “day of awakening” for me. I was recognized and given gifts for being the oldest father in the Father’s Day worship service at church Sunday morning. I know I am getting older and I have mentioned it several times in these blogs, but being publicly recognized by the church for the accomplishment was unexpected for me.
One of the gifts was a solid pewter key ring with an insciption in raised letters: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” (Jeremiah 29:11).
It was nestled inside a coffee mug, on which was painted: “Blessed is the man whose delight is in the LORD. He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in its season. Whatever he does prospers” (Psalm 1:1-3).
Inside the cup was also a plated bookmark with PASTOR engraved at the top, and “THE WORLD IS MY PARISH – John Wesley” engraved on its face. I suppose they thought I would be the oldest father, or maybe Diane was just going to give it to me anyway.
How nice. I am honored. I really am. I have entered a new world. Now everyone will be seeking my wisdom, since old folks are supposed to be wise. Hope they’re not disappointed.
(Being oldest father also means the Bethel congregation is young; I was the youngest father at Timbergrove last year).
