Family

Important to us all

December 28, 2010 (Tuesday)
”picHere it is Tuesday, between Christmas and New Year’s Day. I have to think hard about the day of the week and the date on the calendar this week, because of the big changes in all our schedules. Regular days and dates seem to have been suspended, and we are on a totally new course for a week. We know things will return to normal after the New Year weekend. They have always done so, at least so far.
Dwight, Dan and I had Christmas dinner here at Rockport. Wasn’t like Wanda used to make, but it was O.K., with a really good pre-cooked ham as the main course. The next day, the rest of the family came down and we have had a good time together. Everyone is here except son David and grandson Mike, both of whom had to work this week, granddaughter Angela (in Omaha, Nebraska), and grandsons-in-law John and Stephen. John’s grandmother had heart surgery yesterday and Stephen had to report for duty with the U.S. Navy. Even grandson Andy, from Norfolk, Virginia, is here. First time in a long time this many of us have been together in one place. Those here are sons Dwight and Dan, daughter Dianna, sons-in-law Mark and Rick, daughter-in-law Janet, granddaughters Mindy, Jenny and Chloe, grandsons Sean, Andy, Alex and Austin.
Most families try to get together for Thanksgiving and Christmas each year. That’s a good thing. In olden days, families lived and worked near each other, but no more. We are scattered across the country and around the world. Whatever brings us together reinforces our knowledge that family is special for all of us. God wants it that way.
