Prayer

We learn about it by doing it

November 30, 2010 Tuesday)
”picLast Sunday I preached a sermon about prayer. I thought I might write a blog about prayer, beginning with a formal definition. When I looked up the word, however, I saw that a simple definition is not easily found. Prayer can be defined or described in many ways. It seems to defy adequate definition.
I like God’s invitation to prayer, found in Jeremiah 33:3 (NASB),

‘Call to Me and I will answer you,
and I will tell you great and mighty things, which you do not know.’

I love the description of prayer in the first verse of an old poem that became a hymn, written by James Montgomery in the early Nineteenth Century:
Prayer is the soul’s sincere desire,
Unuttered or expressed;
The motion of a hidden fire
That trembles in the breast.

I appreciate the godly counsel of a grand old gospel song by Chalvar Gabriel:
Just keep on praying till light breaks through
The Lord will answer (will answer) you
God keeps His promise His word is true
Just keep on praying till the light breaks through.

Like many wonderful and worthwhile things in life, we learn about prayer by praying.
