The wind at my back

A nice walk

October 6, 2010 (Wednesday)
”picYesterday morning I walked on the Rockport Beach. The powers that be have really improved it since I last took a stroll there. It is a beautiful place to walk, with almost a mile of green areas and cabanas, the bay on one side and the ski basin on the other. There was a stiff North wind in my face for the first half of the walk; then I turned around and walked back to my car with the wind at my back.
With the wind at my back, I really enjoyed the walk back. Every so often, I met a Sea Gull perched on a post, and I could almost hear him saying, “This way, please.” I watched a beautiful Osprey chase away a Buzzard so that he could have the tasty morsel they both had spied on the ground. I passed a Curlew, foraging in the grass by the side of the road with his tremendously long bill. I saw a couple of Mourning Doves on a ledge at one of the pavilions, and asked them why they were there instead of in my yard.
With the wind at my back, I sniffed the sea air and caught a whiff of fresh fish being cleaned by some successful fishermen on the other side of the road. Then I glanced out over the bay, and there was a big shrimp boat, plowing through the water. On a clear, cool day like yesterday, almost everything I saw was a thing of beauty.
I passed the band shell, and recalled the many Easter sunrise services the minister’s association had conducted there, hearing myself singing “Were you there?” and seeing the great crowds of worshipers in my mind. I imagined that Bicentennial Independence Day when our choir sang, “I Love America” there, utilizing our new Peavy sound system that carried the sounds all over the town. Ah, what sweet memories.
I got to thinking about “the wind at my back.” That’s where I am in life now. I just passed the 79th marker, and the 80th is almost in sight. It’s clear sailing now. Feelings of euphoria flooded my soul as I walked on “the easy side of the street.” I say it one more time, “It’s great to be alive!” As my grand daughter, Chloe, put it, “I love life!”
It was a nice walk. I commend it to you. One mile facing the wind, and one mile with the wind at your back. Both are good for us.
