Sunday

In Beautiful Rockport

September 13, 2010 (Monday)
”picYesterday was my first Sunday for a while to attend church as a member and not as pastor. I went to the First Baptist Church of Rockport, where I have been pastor, and more recently, interim pastor. (Now Pastor Emeritus). I was warmly greeted by everyone who knows me, which reminded me immediately that the church is a very loving fellowship of believers. I attended Sunday School and worship, and afterward was invited to have lunch with several of the members, which I enjoyed very much.
I enjoyed the morning worship and the evening Bible study, led by the pastor, Scott Jones. The morning sermon was illustrated with pictures and was extremely interesting. The point of the sermon was to teach us to exercise spiritual sight and to see things as Jesus sees them. I enjoyed the message very much. In the evening, the Bible study was in Luke 17, and included a very interesting verse (vs 37) that is difficult to interpret. In fact, the pastor said, “No one really knows what it means.” I agree completely. There are theories, but little agreement as to the meaning of the verse. I remember hearing Billy Graham say that, as a young man beginning his preaching ministry, he prayed, “Lord,I believe your Holy Word, the Bible, and I accept by faith those parts that I do not understand.” (Not a direct quotation, but you get the idea, I’m sure). We don’t have to understand every verse and every word to get the message of the Bible and to believe it as God’s Word. I agree with the pastor on Luke 17:37. No one really knows for sure what it means.
On Labor Day weekend, I celebrated 62 years as a preacher of the Gospel, having preached my first sermon at the Liberty Road Baptist Church of Houston on Labor Day weekend in 1948. I will be 79 in eleven days. Time passes quickly when you’re having so much fun.
