..there’s an eye watching you..

The eyes of the Lord are in every place.

July 24, 2007 (Tuesday) – Satellite imagery continues to make progress. You can now see the entire western hemisphere in full color, showing clouds and storms over half the earth. The old sailing vessels made the journeys across the Atlantic in months. Now we can see the entire ocean on our monitors without moving our heads, or even our eyes. Amazing. Absolutely amazing.
Pictures of the earth taken from satellites out in space are common today, and we have become accustomed to them in every T.V. weather forecast. There are many devices up there, however, that have secret purposes, and operate with technologies so advanced that supposedly they can read a license plate on a vehicle, or identify the brand name of a handbag being carried by a person walking down a busy city street.
The cameras are not confined to the satellites. They are on the streets, surveying traffic patterns at busy points of interest. They are in stores and offices, monitored by security staff watching the customers’ actions as they shop. We are rapidly approaching the day when we will be in view of an observer constantly. Some say that trading “some rights to privacy” for “increased security” is “a price worth paying”. Personally, I’m not convinced.
Without getting deeper into that subject, let me just say that we can take great comfort in the knowledge that God sees us and knows everything about us, moment by moment, every day. A hymn from the past reminds us, ““All along on the road to the soul’s true abode/There’s an Eye watching you;/Every step that you take this great Eye is awake,/There’s an Eye watching you./Watching you, watching you,/Every day mind the course you pursue/Watching you, watching you,/There’s an all-seeing Eye watching you” (writer: J. M. Henson).” The song may have been intended to be a warning to the wicked, but it is a tremendous comfort to those who love God.
Proverbs 15:3 “The eyes of the Lord are in every place, Watching the evil and the good.”
Hebrews 4:13 “And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are open and laid bare to the eyes of Him with whom we have to do.”
Psalm 121:1-4: “I lift up my eyes to the hills— where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip— he who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.”
Think about how Jesus saw people as He walked among us. He called Himself the good shepherd, clearly telling us he cares for His sheep. He loves us and wants to help us. Tony Campolo impishly reminded someone in need of comfort, “God carries your picture in his wallet!”
