Ahab, king of Israel, married Jezebel, a Phoenician
princess, who brought with her the worship of Baal,
a fertility god. Elijah, the prophet of God, fought
Baal worship and predicted the downfall of Ahab and
Jezebel because of their leading the nation into
idolatry. His predictions eventually came to pass,
with Ahab’s death in battle and Jezebel’s death 14
years later as she was thrown from her palace and
trampled by a horse, a macabre event that matched
her ruthless reign.
