Yes, you can
January 29, 2010 (Friday)
My wife, Wanda, always did the cooking. Once, when she was sick, I tried and failed. The gravy I made was so bad the kids would not eat it, so I gave it to the pets, who wouldn’t come near it. So I put it outside at the edge of the woods where the wild animals could be relied on to eat anything placed there. They would not eat it either.
Afterwards, Wanda would press me from time to time to do some of the cooking. My response was always, “but I just don’t know how.” She would reply that it’s not all that hard, and I needed to give it a try. I never did.
In these eight years of being my own cook, however, I have learned how to prepare a few things. Some of the meals are pretty good, others not so hot, but almost all of them have been edible if not tasty. I’ve often heard it said, “You do what you have to do.” That is true. I had no idea I could actually cook something that I could eat, but time has shown me that I can. So far, however, it’s been just me. I have not had the courage to prepare a meal for others. At least not many times. And then only because I had to. There was no one else to do it.
What is it you think you cannot do? Don’t say, “I can’t.” An old saying is, “Cain’t never did nuthin.” Maybe someone reading this needs to reconsider accepting an assignment in the Lord’s work. “You do what you have to do.” And if you can do what you have to do, you can do what in your heart you know you ought to do. For your own sake as well as the gospel’s, please give it a try. You can do more than you think you can. I’ve got a bowl of stew that proves it.
