Galveston

Winds, tides, surf and beauty

November 10, 2009 (Tuesday)
picture of CharlesI was in Galveston for a couple of days this week. The weather was a little rough, with high winds and tides. The home in which I was staying was on the bay with a beautiful view. As the water rose, it remained high and dry, but the next door neighbor’s lot was at a slightly lower elevation and his yard and garage were covered with salt water from the bay. Streets in the area were covered with water, and all tidal ponds were full to overflowing.
The really interesting view, however, was on the Gulf side of the island. Waves were crashing into the seawall, and there were many extra rows of high breaking waves. The surfers came from far and near. Seawall Boulevard was lined with cars and trucks of surfers. Boy, did they love the waves.
The weather settled down this morning and the beautiful blue sky could be seen as the rippling bay waters were illuminated by the bright sunshine. I drank my coffee and drank in the sight. In the distance the causeway rose from the water and the vehicles seemed like little bugs moving toward the resort city. As I looked at the expanse of water, I thought of how long it had been there, year after year, day after day, night after night. I tried to imagine the scene without houses and other developments. I daydreamed of natives fishing with spears, and explorers sailing through the passes into the bay waters. I wondered once again how gravity works as this marvelous blue globe spins at 1000 miles per hour and moves through its annual orbit around the sun. Just a little peek at the grand world God has given us. Time to lift our eyes heavenward and sing, “O, Lord my God, How Great Thou Art!”
