Is the end near?

What does Jesus say?

picture of CharlesRemember the widespread paranoia that emanated from the date, January 1, 2000? The dawning of a new millennium (thousand year period of time) brought fears of many kinds and the world braced for some sort of interruption of normality that many believed was certain to come. But the new millennium dawned and nothing unusual took place. The same thing happened as the year 1000 approached. There was even more fear back then because ignorance and superstition were more firmly entrenched into the cultures of the world.
As you read this today, many people are very fearful that the year 2012 will bring many disasters and ultimately the end of the world.
I cannot say that I definitely know that the year 2012 will come and go without the fulfillment of ominous prophecies of doom. I cannot say that because no one knows what the future holds.
Jesus told us all we need to know about the future when he said we do not know when He shall return to earth or when cataclysmic events marking the end of the age shall occur. He said that not even He Himself know such things, but they are known only by our Heavenly Father. Nevertheless, through the centuries, time and time again, people have organized themselves in expectation of end-time events, and many of those frantic days have come during our lifetimes.
I frankly admit I have not studied the materials that are alarming people, nor am I acquainted with the things being predicted. I only know that Jesus emphasized the fact that we need to be ready to the meet the Lord at any time. He urged us to live so that we will be found faithful whenever that time arrives. That’s all we really need to know.
