Think about your health first

April 15, 2009 (Wednesday)
picture of CharlesABC News lists ten diet plans that many people are following these days. They are, “The Flat Belly Diet, The Full Fat Diet, The Low Carb Diet, The Mediterranean Diet, The Detox Diet, The Zone Diet, The Cleveland Clinic 3-Day Diet, The Mayo Clinic Diet, The Grapefruit Diet, and the South Beach Diet.” I’m sure there are countless additional plans being followed by folks these days.
The startling statistics revealing the numbers of people overweight or obese in our country give us a reason for at least thinking about the situation. The health problems associated with weight problems are many, and that should be the main reason for us to consider attempting to lose weight if we have a weight problem. Of course we want to look better and return ourselves to the days of our youth, but neither of those goals provides enough incentive for most people. Besides, when we reach our senior years, well, we’re not going to look 19 again.
The scale showed me this morning that I am 0.6 pounds heavier than I was yesterday. But I’ve learned that it’s the trend that counts, not the reading on any given day.
One interesting article on the ABC site talks about temptation. As I read it, I thought, “This is describing the process by which people are tempted in any way whatsoever, not just in eating.” It all goes back to the “forbidden fruit” of Genesis, and perhaps we should do a Bible study on how we are tempted. The Bible does have much to say about a lot of personal things, such as “Your body is the Temple of the Holy Spirit” (1 Cor 6:19-20), so it doesn’t really belong to you. Take good care of it. It belongs to the Lord.
