Overweight

Just in time for the holiday season

picture of CharlesCan it be true that Christmas Day will arrive in only 22 days? Three weeks from tomorrow! Have you ever had the feeling that you are riding on a “bullet train?” Fast, fast, fast. Time really does fly, doesn’t it? I saw it coming, though, and got a head start on eating. I already am unable to fit in my clothes.
My cardiologist told me last week that human metabolism slows with age. That means that it’s much easier to gain weight, and much harder to lose it. Well, I’m thankful he told me that, because now I know it’s not my fault. That’s what I’ve been waiting for – permission to gain weight. He reminded me, however, that eating right and doing exercise is my responsibility. So, slow metabolism or not, gaining weight is my fault after all. Shucks. The bad news is that I am 30 pounds overweight. The good news is that I’ve gained only 3 pounds in the last 7 years. Of course I need to remember that it takes a lot of fat to weigh 3 pounds. Sadly, it’s not evenly distributed.
All my tests came out very good (cholesterol, etc) so I guess people are sincere when they tell me I look good. I’ve wondered, however, if people tell me that and then whisper to each other about how the old guy is on his last leg.
Oh, well, I take a great deal of comfort in the Bible verse, “My times are in your hands; deliver me from my enemies and from those who pursue me” (Psalm 31:15 KJV). Pursuing me are bread and gravy, ice cream, chocolate candy and other enemies..
Seriously, in these stressful times, we need to remember Psalm 31:15, reminding us that God holds the world in His hand.
