..but by the word of God..

”Man shall not live by bread alone.” These words of Jesus (Matt 4:4) were quoted from Deuteronomy 8:3. This one sentence opens the door for a much higher view of man than that of a simple mammal. Man needs more than simple survival. He needs to rise higher.
Man should not live by bread alone. His body needs food, but his mind needs knowledge, and his heart needs love. His soul needs God. A human being is intended to rise to heights of attainment that only his species can reach.
Man does not live by bread alone. Very few people have interests in life limited to basic survival needs such as food. Every person you know is interested in other matters as well, but sometimes those interests cloud his view of God. Some people are so focused on the things of this world, or inordinate devotion to goals that exclude God, or pleasures whose siren call blinds them to spiritual values, that they convince themselves that thoughts of God are irrelevant.
Man cannot live by bread alone, if by “life” we mean something more than mere existence. An organism can live by bread alone, but a being made in the image of God wants a purpose in life that transcends mere existence. Jesus offers “abundant life” to all. If by “life” we mean a quality of being that feeds the human spirit, then we can find that in Jesus, by believing in Him.
Man needs bread, but he needs much more. He needs the Lord.
