Say a prayer for those affected by the hurricane
September 12, 2008 (Friday)
Yesterday I conducted the funeral service of Isabel (Bel) Franco, a member of the Timbergrove Baptist Church, where I am pastor. Her husband, Steve, has been by her side constantly since she became critically ill several weeks ago. The service was held at the National Cemetery here in Houston, in a very beautiful location, surrounded by greenery and a small lake with fountains.
Meanwhile this area of the coast continues to prepare for Hurricane Ike, due to make landfall tonight, with tropical conditions beginning today. An orderly evacuation has been taking place from areas likely to be inundated by the storm surge, but almost everyone else has been advised to stay indoors during the storm and wait for it to pass. There may be much property damage in Houston and the metropolitan area. The last report yesterday seemed to say the storm will come in over Galveston and be a Category 2, which would not be as strong as earlier predicted. We will soon know what it did, instead of guessing what it will do.
Yesterday was the anniversary of the worst terrorist attacks ever experienced on American soil. It was very difficult to focus on that memorable date during hurricane preparations. But I found it significant that in the midst of the hurricane frenzy here, people remembered “9 eleven” and talked about it.
This will very likely be my last blog for a while, as loss of power here is almost a certainty, perhaps for an extended period of time. If there is anybody out there reading this today, say a prayer for the people affected by the storm.
