The race is on

Candidates are selected

picture of CharlesIf you have ever tried to program your VCR or DVD Recorder, you know that it’s almost impossible if you have no experience in computer operation. This is symbolic of how life in general has changed over the years.
When George Washington was inaugurated as the nation’s first president, this was a tiny country on what is now our east coast. No hotlines to foreign governments, surveillance cameras, busy freeways, crowded airports, satellites or space stations. Don’t get me wrong, George Washington had his hands full, and I’m sure he breathed a sigh of relief when his term was over and he retired to Mount Vernon and a quieter life.
Just think of the difference between what George Washington dealt with from day to day and what the president faces each day in 2008. The comparison is really impossible because the times have changed so much. With the choice of candidates now more or less final in each of the major parties, the nation is hunkering down in anticipation of the conventions, campaigns and November election, when a new president will be chosen.
Let me encourage you to pray for your country, for the presidential candidates and for the leaders of the world. As has been said by many over and again, “We do not know what the future holds, but we know who holds the future.” Let us truly believe what is stamped on our coins: “In God We Trust.”
