The D.A.R. is 129 Years Old Today

The Centennial of George Washington’s inauguration was celebrated in 1889. Americans then grew more interested in their history and its preservation. As a result of that interest, new organizations were started to preserve American history and educate the general population in patriotic values. The Sons of the American Revolution refused to allow women to join their group, and so Daughters of the American Revolution came into being. On August 8, 1890 the Daughters of the American Revolution had its first meeting. Today, August 8, 2019, is the 129th anniversary of that meeting. The first chapter was organized on October 11, 1890. Women who are at least 18 years old and directly descended from a person involved in the United States’ efforts towards independence can become members. A non-profit group, they promote historic preservation, education, and patriotism. Their motto is “God, Home, and Country.”
The tradition of celebrating the Constitution was started many years ago by the Daughters of the American Revolution. In 1955, the DAR petitioned Congress to set aside September 17-23 annually to be dedicated for the observance of Constitution Week. The resolution was later adopted by the U. S. Congress and signed into Public Law #915 on August 2, 1956, by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. The organization has established a musem for relics and a library for relevant publications concerning the Revolution. The DAR has been involved with many patriotic projects through the years.
Let us not confuse patriotism with hate groups claiming to be patriotic. True patriotism, our love of country, has always been prominent in American thinking and has sustained us through our difficult times. Racism, lawlessness, violence against each other and many other negative ideas do not represent the kind of patriotism that defends true righteousness, protects the rights of others and opposes vigilantiism, which usually represents violence against those with whom we disagree.
We applaud truly patriotic organizations that want to bring Americans together in peace. We love America.
