A Joyful Testimony in Song

As I have written before, I did not really start attending church until the summer of 1948, and all the hymns seemed new to me. The following April, Rayford Smith and I went to Abilene for a Training Union Convention. We represented the churches of Houston in the Sword Drill and in public speaking. One of our sessions was in the University Baptist Church and when the music director began leading us in “I Know Whom I Have Believed,” I was impressed by its message and the way we sang it. We sang it with a rapid tempo, and when we did that it brought out the meaning of the words. I was excited about it, and have always enjoyed hearing or singing this song through the years.

The song is based on 2 Timothy 1:12, KJV, “I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.”

I KNOW WHOM I HAVE BELIEVED
Daniel W. Whittle, 1883

I know not why God’s wondrous grace
To me He hath made known,
Nor why, unworthy, Christ in love
Redeemed me for His own.

Refrain:
But “I know Whom I have believed,
And am persuaded that He is able
To keep that which I’ve committed
Unto Him against that day.”

I know not how this saving faith
To me He did impart,
Nor how believing in His Word
Wrought peace within my heart.

I know not how the Spirit moves,
Convincing men of sin,
Revealing Jesus through the Word,
Creating faith in Him.

I know not when my Lord may come,
At night or noonday fair,
Nor if I walk the vale with Him,
Or meet Him in the air.
