Goodness and Mercy

One evening my son, Dwight, went to a convenience store on old Highway 35 and bought gas and a few groceries. Coming out of the store, he thought he saw something in the middle of the highway. It was white. It was moving. Dwight went out there and picked it up. It was a young, beautiful cat. It was friendly and sociable. Had different color in each eye. Turned out to be a girl. And she was deaf. Dwight brought her home. She learned to love us. We loved her.
Isn’t that a good picture of God’s love for us? He sees us in our plight. Our future is very dim indeed. Without thinking twice God came to our rescue and gave us a home with Him. In fact, Jesus told that story, only it was not a cat; it was a sheep (Luke 15).
Of course, it wasn’t a sheep, either, was it? It was you. It was I. Thank you, Lord.

Surely Goodness and Mercy
John Peterson and Alfred B. Smith
1958
A pilgrim was I and a-wand’ring
In the cold night of sin I did roam
When Jesus the kind Shepherd found me
And now I am on my way home
Chorus:
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
All the days all the days of my life
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
All the days all the days of my life
He restoreth my soul when I’m weary
He giveth me strength day by day
He leads me beside the still waters
He guards me each step of the way (Chorus)
When I walk thro’ the dark lonesome valley
My Savior will walk with me there
And safely His great hand will lead me
To the mansions He’s gone to prepare (Chorus)
And I shall dwelll in the house of the Lord forever,
And I shall feast at the table spread for me.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me,
All the days, all the days of my life.
All the days, all the days of my life.
