The Marvelous Grace of God

What is “grace?” The theologians describe it as “the unmerited favor of God.” I would agree but would change the wording to “the undeserved mercy of God.” God demonstrated His grace by sending His only Son to save us. When Jesus was being crucified, he prayed, “Father forgive them.” That was undeserved mercy, the grace of God in action.
A boy was playing in the snow with his friends when they saw their Sunday School teacher walking by. They hid themselves, then one of the boys threw a snowball, knocking off the teacher’s hat. Later that evening, there was a knock at the door of that boy’s house. When the door was opened, there stood the teacher, with a gift for the boy. It was a rod and reel, something he had been wanting for a long time. The following Sunday in class the teacher asked, “Can anyone tell me what “grace” is? The boy answered, “A rod and reel!”
The words of the following hymn impress upon us the real meaning of God’s infinite, marvelous, wonderful grace.

GRACE GREATER THAN OUR SIN
Words by Julia H. Johnston
Tune by Daniel B. Towner

1910

Marvelous grace of our loving Lord,
Grace that exceeds our sin and our guilt!
Yonder on Calvary’s mount outpoured,
There where the blood of the Lamb was spilled.

Refrain:
Grace, grace, God’s grace,
Grace that will pardon and cleanse within;
Grace, grace, God’s grace,
Grace that is greater than all our sin!

Sin and despair, like the sea waves cold,
Threaten the soul with infinite loss;
Grace that is greater, yes, grace untold,
Points to the refuge, the mighty cross.

Dark is the stain that we cannot hide;
What can we do to wash it away?
Look! There is flowing a crimson tide,
Brighter than snow you may be today.

Marvelous, infinite, matchless grace,
Freely bestowed on all who believe!
You that are longing to see His face,
Will you this moment His grace receive?
