Rise Up O Men of God

Yesterday’s blog featured quotations from George Washington, our first president, whose words are valued today as demonstrative of his unquestioned integrity. This hymn appeals to men everywhere to join hands and hearts in serving the needs of others, finding strength in their faith that Jesus Christ is Lord.

This hymn was written for the Brotherhood Movement by Dr. Merrill, long time pastor of the Brick Presbyterian Church in New York. Music was composed by Dr Walter, organist for a time at Columbia University. Text: William Pierson Merrill (1867-1954) Music: “Festal Song”, William Henry Walter (1825-1893) (Album Notes) Conductor: Robert Shaw (1916-1999) Organist: Thomas Dunn (1925-2008) Arrangement by Robert Shaw

RISE UP O MEN OF GOD
Words, William P. Merrill
Music, William H. Walter
1911

Rise up O men of God,
Have done with lesser things.
Give heart and soul and mind and strength,
To serve the King of Kings,
To serve the King of Kings.
Rise up O men of God,
His Kingdom tarries long,
Bring in the day of brotherhood,
And end the night of wrong,
And end the night of wrong.
Rise up O men of God,
The Church for you doth wait.
Send forth to serve the needs of men
In Christ our strength is great,
In Christ our strength is great.
Lift high the Cross of Christ,
Tread where His feet have trod,
As brothers of the Son of Man,
Rise up O men of God,
Rise up O men of God.
Rise up O men of God,
Have done with lesser things.
Give heart and soul and mind and strength,
To serve the King of Kings,
To serve the King of Kings.
