Today is Groundhog Day.
What is a groundhog? It’s a rodent. It’s a specific type of ground squirrel. It’s also known as a woodchuck.

Groundhog Day is the day the Groundhog peeks out of his winter quarters and if he sees his shadow he pops back for another six weeks nap, but if the day be cloudy he remains out, as the weather is to be moderate.
The largest Groundhog Day celebration is held in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, where crowds as large as 40,000 have gathered to celebrate the holiday since at least 1886. The groundhog there is known as “Punxsutawney Phil.” The forecast called for 5° early today with a high of 32°, and mostly cloudy.
The celebration lasts for three days and attracts people with money to spend in the little town.
It is only one of many events that take place in our country every year. Each celebration generates revenue for the city or county that capitalizes on interesting things that people are willing to pay for, because they bring fun and enjoyment.
Good examples are Rockport’s Seafair, Aransas Pass’s Shrimporee, Fulton’s Oyster Fest, Corpus Christi’s Buc Days, and similar celebrations throughout the state.
We can hide ourselves away in our “caves” with everything we’ve ever wanted, or we can get outside where the sun is shining, where real people live and where we can become part of something that is alive, interesting and exciting.
It’s a little late for a trip to Punxsutawney, but maybe next year, OK?

Let’s not wait for Life to come knocking at our door; let’s go find it!
Jesus said, “I came that they might have abundant life.” He was talking about a life of meaning and purpose, in which we have truly found a sense of belonging, filled with joy and peace, laced with love, kindness and goodness, a life that teaches us patience, a life which rewards our faithfulness and loyalty, a life in which Jesus helps us to be gentle with others and keep ourselves in line with truthfulness and honor. Life worth living? You can find it in Jesus Christ.

Saved by His power divine,
Saved to new life sublime!
Life now is sweet and my joy is complete,
For I’m saved, saved, saved!

We talk about these things at church every time we meet. Please come and meet with us and let us know how you feel. If we can help, we surely would love to do so.
