Whiter than Snow

“Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool” (Isaiah 1:18 KJV).
I drive a white car. The last time I had a white car it was a 1963 Chevrolet sedan. It was white, with a capital “W.” On a sunny day, it was hard not to be blinded by the sight of it as it reflected the burning rays of the sun. We were living in Dallas, and one winter night in the early 1960’s we had a nine inch snowfall. We awakened to a world white with snow. It was a winter wonderland. And then I saw my car, sitting outside in the driveway. Nine inches of snow covered the hood, roof and deck of that “white” car. But it didn’t look so white anymore. Against the backdrop of snow, it was at best an “off white,” and even looked a little dingy, because the plain truth is that there is nothing whiter than the snow.
When the Word of God promises us that our scarlet sins become whiter than the snow, we are overwhelmed by the grace of God that saves us and makes us into a “new creation.”
The hymn, “Whiter Than Snow,” says it all.

Whiter Than Snow
Words James L. Nicholson
Music William G. Fischer
1872

Lord Jesus, I long to be perfectly whole
I want Thee forever to ransom in my soul
Break down every idol, cast out every foe
Now wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow
Refrain
Whiter than snow, yes, whiter than snow
Now wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow
Lord Jesus, for this I most humbly entreat
I wait, blessèd Lord, at Thy crucified feet
By faith, for my cleansing,I see Thy blood flow
Now wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow
Lord Jesus, Thou knowest I patiently wait
Come now, and within me a new heart create
To those who have sought Thee, Thou never saidst No
Now wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow
