We repeat it
March 28, 2008 (Friday)
“Come with me if you want to live.” “Hasta la vista, baby.” “No problemo.” “I’ll be back.” In what movie series are these expressions heard? If you say, the Terminator series, you are absolutely correct.
What about, “I don’t think we’re in Kansas anymore.” Does anyone in the whole wide world not know that came from “The Wizard of Oz?” To find someone to repeat it for you, “Just follow the yellow brick road.”
When I was in the Fifth grade, a new comic book appeared on the shelves of the local drug store: “Captain Marvel.” His famous saying was “Shazam!” always printed with an accompanying lightning bolt. Many years later Gomer Pyle made it famous all over again, but when he said it, he didn’t turn into Captain Marvel – he was just saying that instead of “Oh, my goodness!”
“Smile when you say that, pardner.” “Play it again, Sam.” “We’ll head ‘em off at the pass.” “Look! Up in the sky! It’s a bird. It’s a plane. It’s..(can you guess?)” Strange how simple words become not only a part of our vocabulary, but part of our very being.
One would hope and pray that the words of the Holy Scriptures would become part of who we are. “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” “My God shall supply all your needs..” “All things work together for good to those who love God..” “Call unto me, and I will show you great and mighty things..” “Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” “The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want.” “I will never leave thee nor forsake thee.” On and on we can go, citing Scriptures that should have become as much a part of us as flesh and blood.
One of these days, when someone is cursing by yelling God’s name, maybe we’ll hear from the clouds, “You talkin’ to me? You talkin’ to me? You talkin’ to me?”
