National Sugar Cookie Day

July 9 is National Sugar Cookie Day. Considering the fact that there are 130 different kinds of cookies (maybe more), a cookie with its own National Day to celebrate its existence must be quite an honor.
A popular saying when someone is taking something that does not belong to him/her is “caught with his hand in the cookie jar.” One taste of sugar cookies emboldens the most honest among us to get our hand into the cookie jar.
Actually, they rarely make it as far as the cookie jar. When the cook takes them from the oven, both young and old members of the family grab them. They say that chocolate chip cookies are the most popular, but sugar cookies take first place in many homes.
Almost everyone has tried them, and some folks are addicted to them.

I’ve never baked any, but “they say” they are very easy to make. You probably already have the ingredients somewhere in your kitchen. Basically, they are a combination of
flour, baking powder, baking soda, butter, sugar, egg, and vanilla.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In a small bowl, stir together flour, baking soda, and baking powder. Set aside. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in egg and vanilla. Gradually blend in the dry ingredients. Roll rounded teaspoonfuls of dough into balls, and place onto ungreased cookie sheets. Bake 8 to 10 minutes in the preheated oven, or until golden. Let stand on cookie sheet two minutes before removing to cool on wire racks.

Be sure to stand guard as you prepare the dough. Most homes are well-equipped with thieves who can’t wait to lick the bowl. My grandmother used to caution me against eating any of the dough because “it will make you sick.” Well, I ain’t been sick yet.

Amounts, just in case anyone wants to try it out:
2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon baking powder,
1 cup butter, softened, 1 1/2 cups white sugar, 1 egg,1 teaspoon vanilla extract
