Lazy River

Last week we had some songs about summer, and then on the weekend hymns about Heavenly Sunlight and Heaven’s Morning. We may as well share one more song with a theme kin to those. It is “Lazy River,” done by the Mills Brothers with Dean Martin.

LAZY RIVER
Songwriters: Hoagy Carmichael / Sidney Arodin
1930

Up a lazy river by the old mill run
That lazy, lazy river in the noonday sun
Linger in the shade of a kind old tree
Throw away your troubles, dream a dream with me
Up the lazy river, where the robin’s song
Awakes a bright new morning you can vault along
Blue skies up above, everyone’s in love
Up that lazy river, how happy you can be
Up that lazy river with me.

Hoagy Carmichael is one of America’s most prolific songwriters. His works include some of our most popular music. His “Stardust” has been done by more than 500 artists. (Up a) Lazy River has been done by nearly 200 artists. You probably know many of his songs without realizing he was the writer. He was born in 1899 and died in 1981. He left an indelible mark on our music.
