Summer Solstice

As the earth tilts on its axis every year the sun appears to be moving north and gets as far north as it can on this day: Summer Solstice. It is sometimes referred to as “Midsummer” Litha”. It’s the longest day of the year. As the sun appears to be moving south, the amount of daylight lessens each day. The calendar says that this is the first day of summer. It’s time to enjoy vacations, great weather, pools, baseballs, and everything else that goes along with the favorite season of kids and most adults. Enjoy the season, because for many it will come and go in a hurry.
Did you know? The sun does not set at the North Pole today. There are 24 hours of sunlight. There is a cold day in December when the sun does not show up. The North Pole is a weird place to be.
Ever hear the song, “Summertime?”‘
Summertime
Songwriters: Du Bose Heyward / George Gershwin / Ira Gershwin

Summertime, and the livin’ is easy
Fish are jumpin’ and the cotton is high
Oh, your daddy’s rich and your ma is good-lookin’
So hush, little baby, don’t you cry
One of these mornings you’re gonna rise up singing
And you’ll spread your wings and you’ll take to the sky
But till that morning, there ain’t nothin’ can harm you
With daddy and mammy standin’ by
One of these mornings you’re gonna rise up singing
And you’ll spread your wings and you’ll take to the sky
But till that morning, there ain’t nothin’ can harm you
With daddy and mammy standin’ by
Summertime, and the livin’ is easy
Fish are jumpin’ and the cotton is high
Oh, your daddy’s rich and your ma is good-lookin’
So hush, little baby, don’t you cry.
