Fanny Crosby wrote the words to so many hymns that a listing creates amazement on the part of the reader. Many, if not most, of her lyrics are found in the Scriptures. This hymn is no exception, and the first line is based on Ecclesiastes 12:6, “Remember him–before the silver cord is severed, and the golden bowl is broken; before the pitcher is shattered at the spring, and the wheel broken at the well” (NIV). The “silver cord” and “golden bowl” were symbols of the life principle that endures in each person until death. Fanny Crosby was so familiar with the Bible that she could easily dip into Scripture and bring forth just the right words to emphasize the divine touch upon her hymns.
Words, Fanny Crosby
Music, George C. Stebbins
1894
Someday the silver cord will break,
And I no more as now shall sing;
But, oh, the joy when I shall wake
Within the palace of the King!
Refrain:
And I shall see Him face to face,
And tell the story–Saved by grace.
Someday my earthly house will fall;
I cannot tell how soon ’twill be;
But this I know–my All in All
Has now a place in heav’n for me.
Someday, when fades the golden sun
Beneath the rosy tinted west,
My blessed Lord will say, “Well done!”
And I shall enter into rest.
Someday: till then I’ll watch and wait,
My lamp all trimmed and burning bright,
That when my Savior opes the gate,
My soul to Him may take its flight.
