Sixty-five years ago on this date, May 11, 1953, a destructive force tore through Waco, Texas, and forever altered the face of the city. The tornado injured 600 people, took 114 lives, and damaged hundreds of businesses. The chaotic aftermath of this deadly storm left an indelible mark upon the Waco community. I was a student and looking forward to graduation in a few weeks.
Click here to review last year’s blog about Waco and the tornado of 1953.
We have seen many disasters throughout the world in the years since that awful tornado.
Our own community and the surrounding areas and towns are still picking up the pieces of debris left by strong hurricane Harvey last August.
Our hearts go out to all those whose lives have been impacted by a disaster of some kind. Out in California, the big problem was drought. As a result, wildfire after wildfire raged throughout communities, taking lives and property. Then the rains came, and came, and came. The result was mudslides as burned-off land could not contain the water; loss of lives, homes and businesses was everywhere to be seen.
Throughout the northeast storm after storm has raged this winter. Property damage and loss of lives have been daily stories in the news.
Earthquakes, volcano eruptions, tsunamis all have devastated countries and affected the lives of millions of people.
The universe operates according to natural laws. For the most part, we are favored by those laws, but their side effects can be hard for us to live with. The bad comes with the good. God gives his wisdom and strength to us so that we may take measures that lessen the ill effects of storms, etc. He is always with us. He never forsakes us. In the end we will be able to look back over our lives and see that it is so.
