National Pie Day

Today is National Pie Day. Most of this info is quoted from the web.
The American Pie Council (I’ll bet you did not know there was such an organization) created this day simply to celebrate the pie.
They tell us that the most popular pie is the apple pie and the third most popular is the pecan pie. I forget what’s in second place. Of course your personal favorite is the only one that counts, isn’t it?
National Pie Day is a special day that is set aside to bake and cook all of your favorite pies. On this day, you are also encouraged to bake a few new pie recipes. And most importantly, it’s a day to eat pies!
I’ve mentioned before in these blogs that my grandmother baked eight different kinds of pies for me on my tenth birthday. Was I spoiled, or what? Having a special day devoted to pies is my kind of holiday.
A great way to celebrate National Pie Day is to bake some pies and give them away to friends, neighbors, and relatives. You never know, you may be starting a tradition of pie giving between your friends and family.
The American Pie Council sponsors the National Pie Championships. Some of the best pie makers in the world enter their pies. Perhaps you will enter and win the “American Pie Council’s Best Pie in America” award.

My own baking expertise is non-existent, but I did accidentally discover an apple dessert using the microwave oven. First, cut the peeled apple into bite-size pieces. Place them in a bowl. Sprinkle salt over the pieces (not too much). Now sprinkle sugar over the apples. Then sprinkle cinnamon over that, and drizzle a little water over the whole thing. Then crumble graham crackers over the mixture and finally top the stuff with slices of butter. Give it about 5 minutes in the microwave. Let it cool a little, put some vanilla ice cream on top and there you are. Does not qualify as a recipe, but tastes good just the same. I think I left out something, but never mind, do as you like. Apples are so good you can’t lose.
