A very special name
MARCH 2, 2008 (SUNDAY)
We are told in Philippians 2:9 that Jesus has a name which is above every name. The song puts it like this: “Jesus! O how sweet the name. Jesus! Every day the same. Jesus! Let all saints proclaim the blessed name of Jesus!”
We often use three words as the name of our Lord: Lord Jesus Christ. What do these words mean? Let’s take a look at each.
The name of our Savior is a holy name: “Lord.” The word is a title of great respect when used in reference to a person. When used in referring to Jesus, it becomes more: a holy designation. The word, “LORD,” with all caps, is used throughout the King James Version of the Bible, when it translates “Yahweh,” or “Jehovah.” Following the tradition of the Rabbis, the personal name of God is not spoken when reading the King James version. In reference to Jesus, it implies divinity. Angels announced the birth of “a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.” Prophets proclaimed his greatness (Isaiah 9:6), and the New Testament writers declared his deity (John 1:1,3; Philippians 2:6).
The name of our Savior is a human name: Jesus. The word itself is a later rendition of the name, “Joshua,” or “Yeshua.” Many people went by that name. Jesus, therefore, was identifying with mankind in taking a human name. In his humanity, he set a perfect example for us and showed us how to live. The name, like most Hebrew names, had a meaning. The meaning of “Jesus” is “salvation of the Lord.” The name, then, not only signifies his humanity, but also tells us he was a very special human being, shedding his blood for our redemption.
The name of our Savior is also a hope-giving name: Christ. The word is a version of the word, “Messiah,” which means “anointed one.” The word, “anointed,” indicates a person has been set aside for a special role. He came as Christ (Messiah) to deliver us from the bondage of sin. He gives us hope.
“The Lord Jesus Christ” is a very special way of referring to our Savior. Each word carries the clear message that he is able to save us and keep us for all eternity. His name is “wonderful!” (Isaiah 9:6).
