Specialty items

Old things: junk or treasure?

picture of CharlesMy daughter, Dianna, came by this week and we went to Ikea to shop for something she needs. I discovered that Ikea has a cafeteria, and we had a very nice meal while we were there. Then we set off to shop in the huge store.
Ikea is a Swedish company, so many of the items in the store have Swedish signs that tell something about the items displayed. It’s an interesting place.
I enjoyed going into the various departments and seeing all the different kinds of things for sale. I especially enjoy specialty items, whether kitchen stuff, as at Ikea, or electronics, as in a host of various kinds of stores. I love those stores that sell stuff no one has ever heard of, like radios you crank, and lights that clip on books. I rarely buy such things, but I really enjoy browsing the shops that sell them.
I’m also a junk man. I save old stuff, much of which used to be useful, but now occupies a special place in the top drawer of my chest of drawers. Old watches, key rings, writing pens, mechanical pencils, etc. Doesn’t everyone have such a drawer in the house?
My attic is full. My garage is full. My storage sheds are full. My house is full. I’m hopeless. My son, Dwight, is helping me, by hauling away things from the Rockport house to the dump, while I am pastoring Timbergrove Baptist Church in Houston. I should make a will to bequeath my junk to those who would like to have things like a collection of bent nails. I told you, I’m mostly sane, but a little nuts. But it’s nothing new. I’ve been that way a long time. I think I learned my quirky ways growing up during the Depression. That’s why I eat everything on my plate and think bread should be 9 cents a loaf.
