What we eat

Around the world

chas030.jpgAn interesting study has been done about what people eat in the various countries of the world. The diets vary and so do the budgets. In Germany, a family of four spends $500.07 per week for food, while in Chad, the food for a family of six for a week costs $1.23.
The $40 book, “Hungry Planet,” is publicized on the internet at

If interested, go to the web site above and click on “Recent Stories” at the bottom of the page, and the following pages give more information and photographs. One of the interesting features of the book is the photography, picturing families with all the food for a week’s meals spread out before them.
Last Sunday after church some of us went to the Golden Corral for lunch, and one of the ladies commented to me about the amount of food being served in that one place that day. We discussed world hunger and the malnutrition and diseases associated with poor diets around the world. With all sorts of delicious food on all the tables in the restaurant, it was hard for us to comprehend the fact that somewhere in this wide world people are starving to death.
One of the best offerings we have at church is the offering for world hunger. The money is managed wisely, not only buying food for distribution to the hungry, but also funding programs that help people in other nations to produce the food they need for survival. We must not forget the promise of the Lord to acknowledge those who “see Him hungry and give Him something to eat.”
