You Raise Me Up

The words of the song, “You Raise Me Up,” were written Brendan Graham (born 1945), who is an Irish songwriter and novelist. He is one of Ireland’s most famous lyricists and song writers. Rolf Løvland wrote the music. The song was written by and for Løvland himself and performed for the very first time at the funeral of Løvland’s mother. He noted “there’s something about the song people are embracing – which becomes emotionally strong..I believe people think of it as a song they use for their own stuff.” This song is used as a contemporary hymn in church services.
I can think of the words as being directed toward the Lord as the One who raises me up, time and again, and makes me more than I can be. But the words could also be spoken to another person who has helped me along life’s journey to be a better person. Either way, it is song that expresses deep feelings. It is the perfect song for Josh Groban.
