June 20, 2017 (Tuesday)
Today is National Ice Cream Soda day. One good thing about ice cream soda–you can make it yourself at home. Just pour soda pop over ice cream and presto! You have created an ice cream soda all by yourself.
The ice cream soda that I remember from my childhood was at the Kress 5 & 10 store on the corner of Main and Capitol in Houston. When my mother went shopping downtown (before the age of suburban malls), she always went to Kress and Woolworth, right across the street from each other. I guess you might say that they were the KMart and Wal Mart of their day. I loved both of them because they had big toy counters, and I always would take my time sampling the six-shooter cap pistols with the ivory handles.
Kress had another attraction for me in the basement, at the foot of the stairs that met you when you walked in the front door of the store. Mother always treated me to a Strawberry ice cream soda at the fountain there at the foot of the big stairway. It was always in a tall glass, with more than soda pop in it. It had flavoring and on top it had a cherry floating in whipped cream. Boy, did I ever enjoy ice cream soda at Kress. With the toy counter just up the aisle, what more could a kid ask for? No wonder there’s a “National Ice Cream Soda Day” every year on June 20.
We should all do our patriotic duty today and enjoy an ice cream soda! Strawberry, if you please, or chocolate, or vanilla, or banana, or….
