Phoenix, Arizona

The year was 1989. Wanda and I had been to the Southern Baptist Convention which met that year in Las Vegas. On the way home, we stopped over at Phoenix, Arizona and decided to go to the famous zoo there. It’s a nice place. Here’s a map.

“Not a creature was stirring”
A nice place, but on the morning we decided to go there, it was too hot, even for the animals. We didn’t see any. They were all in hiding, somewhere in the shade. The temperature rose to 115° that day!
Our motel room faced the west and the air conditioner could not keep up with the heat in the afternoon. We decided to go to the air-conditioned mall across the street. We stepped outside, took a deep breath, held hands and ran for the nearest shade. We did that several times before reaching the mall. And, get this: Arizona’s statewide temperatures average six degrees higher than that of Phoenix. Phoenix is located in the Sonoran Desert. Believe it or not, it is one of the fastest growing cities in the United States, with a metropolitan population of 4.3 million. Sounds like a good place to be in the air conditioning business.
On another trip we had taken with the family we stopped at a picnic table in Needles, California, on the river and the Arizona state line. We tried to make sandwiches, but could not do it well, because it was so hot and dry that the bread kept getting hard before we could get the “fixings” on it. True story. Not one of those “preacher tales” you’ve heard about.
Rockport has had some very hot weather already this year. When we get news of the Gulf heating up, we get a little nervous, because we are due a hurricane. It’s been 47 years since the last major storm hit us. That must be a record of some kind. Oh, well, “Què serà será.” (a la Doris Day).
