You know how powerful the final three words of the hymn, “Saved, Saved,” are, if you have ever sung it as a member of a congregation at worship. “Life now is sweet and my joy is complete, for I’m saved, saved, saved!” The hymn was written by Jack P. Scholfield (1882-1972). Born in Kansas (died in Missouri), he graduated from Baker University, Baldwin City, Kansas, in 1906. He then taught school, became an evangelistic singer, and worked for the Home Mission Board (1912-1917, 1919). Around age 49, he entered the real estate field in Fort Scott, Kansas. In 1950, he retired and moved to Poplar Bluff, Missouri. He said of this hymn, “The melody just came to me, almost as a gift. Then I simply tried to make the words fit the tune. It was popular from the start.”
Saved, Saved Jack P. Scholfield 1911 Chorus: Saved by His pow’r divine, Saved to new life sublime! Life now is sweet and my joy is complete, For I’m saved, saved, saved! Verses: I’ve found a Friend, who is all to me, His love is ever true; I love to tell how He lifted me And what His grace can do for you. He saves me from every sin and harm, Secures my soul each day; I’m leaning strong on His mighty arm; I know He’ll guide me all the way. When poor and needy and all alone, In love He said to me, “Come unto Me and I’ll lead you home, To live with Me eternally.” |
