Blessed Assurance

Fanny Crosby was blinded by a doctor when she was six weeks old. Her father died when she was still a toddler, her mother had to find employment and could not be with her, so she was raised by her grandmother, who led her to memorize the Bible and much well-known poetry. She became a poet, writing both religious and secular verse. She composed 9,000 hymns. She provided the words to tunes that others presented to her. Her method was to let the tunes speak to her, and she wrote down what they said. Mrs. Knapp brought her the tune and asked her if it said anything. After hearing it three times, she said, it says, “Blessed Assurance, Jesus Is Mine.”

BLESSED ASSURANCE
Words by Fanny Crosby
Music by Mrs. Joseph Knapp
1873

Chorus:
This is my story, this is my song,
Praising my Savior all the day long;
This is my story, this is my song,
Praising my Savior all the day long.
Verses:
Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine!
Oh, what a foretaste of glory divine!
Heir of salvation, purchase of God,
Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood.
Perfect submission, perfect delight,
Visions of rapture now burst on my sight;
Angels, descending, bring from above
Echoes of mercy, whispers of love.
Perfect submission, all is at rest,
I in my Savior am happy and blest,
Watching and waiting, looking above,
Filled with His goodness, lost in His love.
