He Leadeth Me (in 2017)

The hymn, “He Leadeth Me,” was written in 1859 by Joseph Henry Gilmore (1834-1918).
He was born in Boston, educated at Brown University and Newton Theological Institution, and became a professor on both a college and seminary level. He was a Baptist pastor in Fisherville, New Hampshire for some time.
Surely we can make the words of this hymn a statement of our hope for the new year that begins today. It is our prayer that we will follow his leading on each of the days that lie before us.

HE LEADETH ME
J. H. Gilmore
1859

1 He leadeth me: O blessed thought!
O words with heavenly comfort fraught!
Whate’er I do, where’er I be,
still ’tis God’s hand that leadeth me.
Refrain:
He leadeth me, he leadeth me;
by his own hand he leadeth me:
his faithful follower I would be,
for by his hand he leadeth me.
2 Sometimes mid scenes of deepest gloom,
sometimes where Eden’s flowers bloom,
by waters calm, o’er troubled sea,
still ’tis God’s hand that leadeth me. Refrain
3 Lord, I would clasp thy hand in mine,
nor ever murmur nor repine;
content, whatever lot I see,
since ’tis my God that leadeth me. Refrain
4 And when my task on earth is done,
when, by thy grace, the victory’s won,
e’en death’s cold wave I will not flee,
since God through Jordan leadeth me. Refrain
