Betcha didn’t know today, December 5, is “National Repeal Day.” On December 5, 1933, the 21st Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified, repealing the 18th Amendment that had established Prohibition.
Prohibition had been labeled as “The Noble Experiment,” with its banning of manufacture, sale or transport of alcoholic beverages in the United States.
Franklin Roosevelt had campaigned for President with a promise to do away with Prohibition. He celebrated his victory by having a drink.
I was two years and two months old when Prohibition was abolished. There were still states and local political entities that were “dry” for many years after passage of the amendment. For all practical purposes, none of those areas exist nowadays.
There were problems associated with Prohibition, and there are problems in our society because of the abuse of alcohol.
It’s legal to drink alcoholic beverages if one is of age, but not mandatory. Refraining from the use of alcoholic beverages does no harm. Total abstinence from alcohol is a wise choice.
