Annie Johnson Flint was born on Christmas Eve, 1866 in New Jersey. When she was 3 years old, her mother, only 23, died. She and her sister were raised by the widow of her father’s friend under meagre circumstances. They felt unwanted. The pair was later adopted by another family, and their name became “Flint.” Shortly afterwards, their father died. Their adopted parents maintained a Christian home and loved the children. Although they were Baptists, Annie was later converted in a Methodist revival. She believed that all Christians are members of “the household of faith,” and through the years members of different denominations aided her in ministry. She later became crippled by arthritis, and unbearable pain, but found comfort and hope in poetry, which later provided an income for her. She died in 1932. In addition to the tune by Hubert Mitchell, the song was published with an earlier tune.Click here to read her story. This hymn, which at first was her poem, typifies her faith.
Lyrics: Annie Johnson Flint (1925?) Music: Hubert Mitchell (1941) He giveth more grace when the burdens grow greater, He sendeth more strength when the labors increase; To added afflictions He addeth His mercy, To multiplied trials, His multiplied peace. When we have exhausted our store of endurance, When our strength has failed ere the day is half done, When we reach the end of our hoarded resources Our Father’s full giving is only begun. Fear not that thy need shall exceed His provision, Our God ever yearns His resources to share; Lean hard on the arm everlasting, availing; The Father both thee and thy load will upbear. His love has no limits, His grace has no measure, His power no boundary known unto men; For out of His infinite riches in Jesus He giveth, and giveth, and giveth again. |
