The Real Thing

Coca Cola had a winning ad with “Coke–it’s the real thing!” Clearly, the implied message was, “All those other soft drinks are not the real thing.”
The reality concerning an actor is that he or she is an actor. That is their area of expertise. A famous line from televisions early days was, “I’m not a doctor, but I play one on TV.” Dressed in a physician’s white garments, he would then proceed to tell us about the product he was selling. He looked and sounded like a doctor, but he was an actor.
Being very good with certain skills in life does not make one an expert in every skill. A college professor may not know what to do if suddenly he were asked to operate heavy machinery.
Actors play many parts in their stage productions and movies. Many are qualified to give others advice about acting and the theater. That does not qualify them to give advice about other subjects.
masks.jpgThe word “hypocrite” in the Bible means, “actor.” When Jesus encountered religious leaders who were insincere in their professions of religion, he became outspoken about it and said to their faces, “”Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which on the outside appear beautiful, but inside they are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness” (Matthew 23:27 NASB).
We believers are known as “Christians.” Each of us should ask himself or herself, “Am I the real thing?”
