An Evening Song (Psalm 4)

Psalm 4 is David’s prayer as he retires for the night. He finds peace within as he prays.
David’s son, Absalom has attempted to assassinate David and is leading his followers to take command of the kingdom. David prays for God to make clear to his enemies God is on his side, and they cannot win (vv. 1-2).
In his mind David talks to his enemies. The LORD chose David as king; he did not choose Absalom. The LORD made David different from his enemies and will listen to David and answer him. He urges them to suppress their anger and worship the LORD (vv. 3-5).
David has confidence that the rebellion will run its course and the land will be blessed so that the needs of all are met and the people no longer rebel. He is so confident that this will happen that he goes to sleep for the night (vv. 6-8).

PSALM 4 (NIV)
For the director of music. With stringed instruments. A psalm of David.

1 Answer me when I call to you, my righteous God.
Give me relief from my distress; have mercy on me and hear my prayer.
2 How long will you people turn my glory into shame? How long will you love delusions and seek false gods?
3 Know that the Lord has set apart his faithful servant for himself; the Lord hears when I call to him.
4 Tremble and do not sin; when you are on your beds, search your hearts and be silent.
5 Offer the sacrifices of the righteous and trust in the Lord.
6 Many, Lord, are asking, “Who will bring us prosperity?” Let the light of your face shine on us.
7 Fill my heart with joy when their grain and new wine abound.
8 In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety.

David’s prayer might well have been this one as he drifts off to sleep for the night:

“Lord, thank you for all my blessings, for your protection and guidance. Those who fight against me are fighting you, and they are waging a hopeless battle. You will continue to bless me, I know. Good night, Lord.”

Our own prayer as we end the day might well be, “Thank you, Lord, for the day and its blessings. Thank you for the promise to keep me through the night, and to help me tomorrow. Good night, Lord.”
