John Merritte Driver, who wrote this hymn, was born February 10, 1857 in Jefferson County, Illinois. He died June 7, 1918 in Chicago, Illinois. He is buried in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
Driver attended Illinois Agricultural College and Boston University. He was ordained a Methodist Episcopal minister and served in Prairie, Illinois (as of 1880), and at the People’s Church, Chicago, Illinois (1902-07). He co-edited Songs of the Soul in 1885.
I love the way this song begins: “Wonderful story of love, tell it to me again!” The gospel of Jesus Christ never grows old. Its message is new and fresh to those searching for a meaningful life with purpose.

WONDERFUL STORY OF LOVE
John M. Driver, 1892
Wonderful story of love;
Tell it to me again;
Wonderful story of love;
Wake the immortal strain!
Angels with rapture announce it,
Shepherds with wonder receive it;
Sinner, oh, won’t you believe it?
Wonderful story of love.
Wonderful! Wonderful!
Wonderful, wonderful story of love.
Wonderful story of love;
Though you are far away;
Wonderful story of love;
Still He doth call today;
Calling from Calvary’s mountain,
Down from the crystal-bright fountain,
E’en from the dawn of creation,
Wonderful story of love.
Wonderful! Wonderful!
Wonderful, wonderful story of love.
Wonderful story of love;
Jesus provides a rest;
Wonderful story of love;
For all the pure and blest,
Rest in those mansions above us,
With those who’ve gone on before us,
Singing the rapturous chorus,
Wonderful story of love.
Wonderful! Wonderful!
Wonderful, wonderful story of love.
